Vincent
Van Gogh – the Dutch post-impressionist artist considered one of the
most influential in the world -- did not begin painting until his late
twenties, completing many of his best-known works during the last two
years of his life. In just over a decade, he produced more than 2,100
artworks, consisting 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolours,
drawings, sketches and prints. However, he remained largely unnoticed
in his lifetime and even after his death in 1890 (at age 37), and his
fame peaked much later, near the time of World War I.
